In 1962 H. R. Keller & Co., Inc. started as a surplus line broker serving Western New York. Keller & Co. was founded as an affiliate of Henry R. Keller & Associates, Inc. a pioneer in the insurance premium finance business, having started operations in 1955. Keller & Co. provided brokers and their clients with surplus line auto physical damage coverage until it became available through the New York Auto Insurance Plan. At that point, in 1968, Keller & Co. contracted with Foremost Insurance Company as an MGA to provide mobile home and recreational vehicle coverages, a relationship going strong after 36 years.
In the 1974 Keller & Co ventured into insuring restaurants and taverns as the start of its commercial lines offerings. By 1982, Keller & Co. had grown into writing a wide range of commercial GL and package lines and had added additional personal lines markets for motorcycle, personal marine and non-standard homeowners. The year 1982 also marked the retirement of founder Henry R. Keller, and he enjoyed 28 years of retirement in southwest Florida, unitl his death in July 2010. Eric Keller, President acquired the company in March 1984. John Barton, Vice President, joined Keller & Co. in August 1984.
Since then, the general agency has grown into offering a broad spectrum of commercial and personal specialty lines coverages written in several carriers for whom Keller & Co. holds "the pen." Keller & Co. acts as a managing general agent, surplus line broker, program administrator and was recently approved as a correspondent with Underwriters at Lloyds. In January 2004, Keller & Co. officially opened its Professional Liability department, and we welcome submissions for any PL risk.
The company's staff is its greatest asset, and Keller & Co. is proud to boast of its loyal and experienced staff. Recent retirements include personal lines underwriters June Schafer (35 years service) and Virginia Bradley (28 years service). Our senior underwriters average 14 years with Keller & Co. and many of them have years of previous experience with carriers or other wholesalers.
